In June of 2016, the Gloucester Township Police Department (GTPD) promoted a new mobile app called Fur Alert to help its community report and recover lost pets. This free mobile app, Fur Alert, is an emergency response system that can notify nearby people with information and a photo about a reported missing pet giving an increased chance to help reunite a lost animal with its owner. This week the quick actions of a prepared pet owner, the GTPD and the Fur Alert app had proved its value to Gloucester Township and its community.

On November 1, 2016 at approximately 4:13 PM, the GTPD had received a call from a local veterinary office that they had located a lost dog. An officer responded and took the dog to police headquarters to await the arrival of the animal control officer, and in many cases the eventual trip to the Camden County Animal Shelter. The pet owner having realized their pet was missing immediately used the Fur Alert app. Numerous officers received the notification from Fur Alert when it went out at approximately 5:17 PM, at which time one officer realized it was the same lost dog that was just brought into police headquarters. This officer used the mobile app to immediately make contact with the pet owner within 5 minutes of the Fur Alert, who quickly responded and was happily reunited with their lost dog, “Lilly.” At the GTPD, police officers take photos of lost pets they recover, and post them on the agencies social media sites in hopes to help find missing pet owners. In this case, the fast use of the app by the pet owner and GTPD did not even allow time for the photos to be posted to social media. “I am so pleased that we were able reunite this lost pet with its owner not only because of the bond that exists between so many and their pets, but also because we avoid the expenses that are incurred when we would otherwise have to house animals in the animal shelter,” said Chief Harry Earle.
